December 09 From Mini-Microsoft: Aspects of an L63 ContributorAn interesting piece that probably work in all levels at all companies. The comments show the many different sides existed though. Personally my mind has moved beyond the number game - but I think the "Aspects of an L63 Contributor" section is very inspiring.
From: mini-microsoft Achieving Senior Level 63 at Microsoft
"... Aspects of an L63 Contributor: some random aspects that come to my mind beyond our CSPs:
October 07 TalkAbout: Eee PC modded by Intel engineers to boot in five secondsOne thing about open source is that you always get good external contribution as long as people have faith in your product. you will never see these kind of joint company work in MS in such a speedy way...
Eee PC modded by Intel engineers to boot in five secondsby Nilay Patel, posted Oct 7th 2008 at 3:43AM Sure, we've seen projects like SplashTop boot a stripped Linux build quickly, but Intel engineers at the recent Linux Plumbers Conference took things a little farther last Thursday, starting up modified versions of Fedora and Intel's own Moblin Linux on an SSD-equipped Eee PC in just five seconds. That's all the way to an idle CPU and disk, not cheating and starting a window manager while background services thrash in the background, mind you -- and it's fast enough that the splash screen was removed from both distros. The changes are being sent back to the Moblin and Fedora trunks, but if you're curious, a detailed overview of the changes awaits at the read link.[Via SlashGear] October 01 A quick and dirty test drive of www.photoshop.comFor a while now, I have been struggling to find a good solution for photo sharing. At least for me, there are many types of photos that require different usage pattern, and they all can come down to these two main category
I don't want to use the same solution for 1 and 2. And for 2, I don't want to spend any money into web hosting or storage when I may have already spent $$ on things like flickr. However I do want to separate the two "lives", as you may put it - I definitely don't want my potential customers to see all my friends contact or party photos, for example. Over some causal conversation, my friend in the photography business mention www.photoshop.com (since I am already a user of Photoshop), and so just for kicks, I log into www.photoshop.com and see what I can do online.
I can edit those photos while they are in flickr (the functionality for editing is pretty rich... as expected of Photoshop) and if I so inclined, I can drag them to photoshop album and show off that way. Once I have an album in Photoshop.com, I can choose to turn on/off feature such as ability to download/print photos, who can see them, and add caption or comments. I can choose to send a gallery style link to people (e.g. http://www.photoshop.com/user/ericlam/?galleryid=acda5d6b36244221ae12af0d9326659a&trackingid=BTAGC&wf=share) or embed a simple gallery in any sites (like this blog) – a sample can be seen below. What it lacks in social network functionality, it totally make up in the presentation side. I can totally see usage out of it - I can keep flickr/facebook/live/whatever as my social network purpose, and show my more "professional" shots through this site. I think Adobe has its target usage place very smartly in the professional presentational purpose category - not surprising really, since Photoshop is really associated with professional photography business now days.
July 03 Talking about Nikon D700 plus hands-on preview: Digital Photography ReviewI was fully expecting new camera in the form of a "more affordable full frame" DSLR to come out from all the major DSLR player this year, so you can imagine how disappointed I was when Canon push out the entry level (EOS 1000D) instead. Having to use the 40D for a year now, I was very much waiting for the 5D replacement. Then not long ago Nikon heard the hungry thoughts of mine and so many others and announced the D700. The feature set is impressive for the price of US$3000 (I am just quoting the ones that I am interested in):
One might ask: why on earth am I so excited about Nikon when I am using Canon? the short answer is that I think this might be a wake up call for Canon for ignoring the middle tier for a long time. The long answer logic is more like:
Either way, I think the ultimate winner is consumer like me. Quote
June 27 Bill's Town Hall Meeting Interesting Town Hall today. His expression when he walks in and everyone just keep clapping... the speechless-ness and the long moment where he takes it all in. That expression is just no way to fully describe that emotion... so mixed. You can tell he has been through a lot. And you can tell he is missing the place already Makes me wonder if anyone of us will ever have that moment too. June 26 Talking about How Hard Could it Be?: Glory Days - Bill Gates - working for MicrosoftAn interesting look at the BillG that is closer to what I remember of him than what peopel ususally say on the web. June 24 Talking about 'What Do You Really Want From Us?'Perhaps a little too blunt for some to hear it... but IMO it is not too far from the truth. At the very least living in US for 6 years, I certainly see some of the American Idealism myself. However it is interesting to notice that American themselves are starting to realize that they are no longer "the boss" in this new age... and the truth is that no one is "the boss" anymore (or... until another world war decide who the new "boss" should be). November 14 Another reason to buy the Wii~~!I can totally see how this can work out in a cheap way to get some cool musical/film action going on at home... even if it is not very practical.
November 09 The sad reality of what US has become: Live in FearRead this today. It's a sad reminder that after 911 (probably even before?) everyone is now all tensed up and constantly over reacting upon other people's action:
To me the puzzling part is that this (what to me is) over-reacting is mostly crying wolf that most likely masked the real danger when a real terroist is doing something harmful to a nation - let's face it, if a terror org. is really planning something bad, it's likely doing it in a way that most people will not be able to tell just by looking like a tourist taking pictures on/near a train.
Second, and the really sad part of the story is that these actions, although most likely rare (apparently not so rare these days), is really isolating USA from the rest of the world (as if previously USA is not already disliked by many enough). I still recall when I was studying in Australia, people in Oz in general don't look too highly of US tourists because of their general attitude and behavior - I mostly just noted them as culture difference. However as time and politics changed, the occurance of such incidents will surely have more profound effect of the world's preception of US, whether you want to argue that it is rare cases or not - afterall, it is all about the PR and preception of people about a nation, not always about the facts). September 20 SeaDragonI have seen it more than once... but everytime I see it at different places I still get that "wow" effect.
August 22 Creative way to resize an imageFinally someone has (seem to) figured out a way to make image resize in a logical way. I particularly like how they can adpat to new alogrithm if necessary... at least I think they can use face detection in today's camera to help the scene carving tech.
But it becomes an interesting question as to where are they really storing that data... I think the image's meta data is getting fatter and fatter...
May 31 Microsoft SurfaceI remember first seeing this a few years back at Company's teched and thinking "now that's a good idea... It would be cool to work on that"... it's nice to see at least there are some good things that does become reality at work...
March 02 Music & LyricsOut of all the craziness, it is always a lovely thing to be able to get away from it all and catch a movie. Against the odds, I acutally find that "Music & Lyrics" is a nice surprise. I though it would be a typical love story with a little "Notting Hill" comedy. Well... it is ... but also with a bit of depth into the script and character conversations... and overall, it shows the care and passion into making this movie. Not going to be a movie critic and explain how good I felt about the movie... but this particular line stuck in my head long after the movie... it's something like: "Music is like when you first date someone, Not a bad way to describe the relationships actually. Anyway... it is one of those funny movie that you will feel nice and warm with a smile on your face when you leave the cinema...

February 05 When can we use these *Mouth Drooling*...A discussion in an internal company alias about multi-touch display technology "sparked my imagination" (read: day dreaming) that one day I can use these to "help" (read: waste money upon) my photography hobby... lol What get shown to public is just a tip of an iceberg... from what I know, this is much more real (closer to reality) and affordable than one might think :) It reminded me why I chose IT as a career... I am a tech junkie :P 妙答HH sent me this one during lunch... made me smiled for the rest of the afternoon actually ^_^
Talking about Sound of I-Tunes Still Silent in VistaSometimes I really wonder what are those app-compact people in the next building do for their living... I still remember when I first dog-food the darn thing and nothing (yes, nothing) on my home machine actually works 100% (not even games, some MS applications like digital image suite), but those were earlier days... but now that the product is out, I don't know what other excuses they can actually come up with. You might say that Apple should work harder at it... but think of it this way - Apple doesn't care if it works on PC or not that much... it has its Mac. From a business point of view, I would darn well make sure Apple does its thing properly because down the road MS is the one suffer more in PR. Sometimes we engineer need to think more like customers. May be none of the guys working on app-compact actually uses IPod? Quote Sound of I-Tunes Still Silent in Vista 2007-02-05: Pan's Labyrinth.. is it her own imagination?Has been a while since I was able to watch any movies. So it was a nice change of pace to be able to catch one. The movie Pan's Labyrinth has been receiving great reviews, so HH and I decided to check it out. We were not disappointed.
HH was worry that it was one of those kid's fantasy movies at first... far from it
The characters are very distinctive, with the separation of good and evil very clearly defined. Which is a good thing, since that way you don't need to second guess anything and concentrating of the experience. The pure evil that Sergi Lopez (I think that's how you spell it?) is splashed onto the sliver screen is something I rarely see these days... he is able to show his evil without having evil "written all over his face".
The young lead actress is especally captivating... Not only does Ivana Baquero has that innocence that fit right into the character, her eyes and voice has that magical quality that will really leave you "experienc" with the character... pity with her, feel fear and worry for her.
Unlike recent films that put heavy showcase of technology, this film uses technology as a tool, not the star. It is not to say that the file is low-tech, on the opposite, the tech is very clearly shown, but yet it is well merged into the script and play so you won't get blinded by it. It is a very thoughtful way of saying "this is a movie, not a tech demo".
However the character developement and the storyline is ultimatly what makes this film so thought provoking... the mere question as to whether Ofellia is dreaming all these fatansy up or it is indeed real to the point that only Ofellia can see the underground creatures can be debated over a long time.
If you simply put your attention to the end of the film, it may seem that she is simply dreaming up all the things she was seeing, like any other kid. The story then becomes a tragic story of the war and the evil ruling of a step father.
But you will find yourself battfled by all the incidents, littered carefully around every conor of Ofellia's journey... how did she end up with the baby root to begin with? how was she able to actually has the dagger in her hand in the first place? how did she able to get into the general's room if the magical chalk is not real?
The best part though, is that the director (masterfully) leaves the answers to all these questions up to your own imagination January 22 2006-01-22: Fly past another year... Paying the price with innocence within thy heart. unfamiliar design document to catch up on...
Meeko sleeping on top of the laptop (perfect heat pad replacement)...
that's pretty much sums up my birthday. It feels like the same every birthday: I feel like I have been here before, and yet the surrounding feel so... alien and forigen. Every year something new happen, but they all feel the same; like new movies with the same old theme.

If it was not for parent's birthday card and a reminder from HH & Annie online, I think I would have forgot it was my birthday actually.
With so many things happening at work and off work, it is a blessing to be able to get away from it all... even if it is just for a weekend. knowing that I was spinning my head at work, HH took the care to arrange the bookings and addresses that we needed, and we researched the places to go... so I only need to map out the routes and go for the easy drive (thanks dear
... God really has his plan ready... the trip that we were thinking of doing during Xmas, is now a perfect weekend get away (thanks to the storm).

I have always been a fan of the "open spaces, cosy living" philosophy: the sky, the ocean... with a nice, small cosy living style. I think the Ocean Lodge really fit our bill. I think it is worth the (almost) 5 hours drive... lol.
Standing out in the balcony, slipping and chatting with HH, we realize that in actually fact we have actually known each other for more than a year already...
how time escapes through our grasp when you least expected it. And how time flies when you feel comfortable in your own environment, having a heart to heart talk with a soul that shines.
... and more than ever, I feel that life in itself is
forcing me out of my confort zone. From a care-free, live by instint life, to the mind set of planning and forward anticipation of life (cost of living, personel distribution, carrer path, new market oppotunity...)
From not really caring what others think about it as long as I think it is right (yet so caring on how my words can affect others' emotion), to the politically correctly phased meeting with overseas resources, and learning how to act, how to talk, how to love, how to hate, how to not be too concern about how they will get affected...

I use to hate business world... so fake, so "calculating"... and yet, I feel that I am more and more becoming one.
At the bottom of my soul I kind of hate it, and the top of my heart I am looking forward to all the new challanges I will have to fight through one by one.
To be honest, it is simplier to live in a setting where I do not need to express. And yet, able to express, and able to receive the feedback from the expression is unexpectedly rewarding (when the feedback does come back).
Now I understand why *I* need holidays... not because I want to see the world...
... more because I want to be able to get away once a while.
